Explore the reasons that Jewish immigrants from Poland, Germany, Lithuania, and Russia came to the slate region and examine the outcomes for the immigrants and their descendants in this major exhibit. Consulting scholar, Robert S. Schine, Ph.D., Middlebury College, places the stories of local Jewish families in the context of national and world history. The exhibit traces the themes of culture, economics, and education beginning in the country of origin at the time of immigration, shifting to the Jewish immigrants' new lives in the Slate Valley, and following the paths of their descendents. The new exhibit complements an existing comprehensive exhibit about immigrant slate quarry workers from Wales, Ireland, Italy, Slovakia, and Poland, which was funded by a major grant from the New York Council for the Humanities in 2003.

The exhibit, which runs through June 2007, is partially funded by the New York Council for the Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Shepard Broad Foundation, Inc., in memory of long-time Granville public servant Morris Rote-Rosen and his wife Sally Cherin, and his parents, Abram Rote-Rosen and Rose Mevzos.

The Welsh Slate Museum presented by
Museum Keeper Dafydd Roberts

When: 1:30 pm
Where: Slate Valley Museum
Granville, New York

Visit the Welsh Slate Museum without leaving the country! Museum Keeper Dafydd Roberts gives an audiovisual presentation of our sister museum in Llanberis, North Wales, housed in the workshops of the former Dinorwig Quarry. The workshops, built in 1870 in a pattern similar to a British Empire Fort, supplied all the repair and maintenance work of the quarry, which employed over 3,000 men at its peak. The Dinorwig Quarry closed in 1969, and by 1972 the workshops re-opened as a museum operated by the National Museums & Galleries of Wales. Many of Dinorwig's former quarrymen and engineers were employed to present and interpret their craft, and significant examples of equipment were collected for exhibition. Since then a row of quarrymen's housing has been meticulously moved to the site to interpretation three significant periods in the history of the Welsh slate industry.

Jewish Life Museums Tour

When: 5 am - 10 pm
Where: Slate Valley Museum
Granville, New York
Cost: $129 per person
Limited to 36 people

Get up early to seize the opportunity for this one-day study tour of two New York City museums that interpret Jewish immigration in the early 1900s—The Lower East Side Tenement Museum and The Museum of Jewish Heritage. At the Tenement Museum, experience the close quarters of the Levine family apartment/garment shop as it was in 1897. The guided tour recounts the story of their lives as garment workers—one that is mixed with life, death, hope, discrimination, and disease. Break for lunch on your own at famed Katz's Delicatessen nearby before traveling to Battery Park to visit New York City's newest Jewish museum. By guided tour of the first floor exhibit, Jewish Life a Century Ago, learn about how and where Jews lived, their rich and diverse traditions, and how the forces of social change shaped their lives. Wander on your own through two more floors to view exhibits about the war against the Jews and Jewish renewal. Depart at 5p.m. with a box dinner and arrive back at the Slate Valley Museum by 10 p.m.

Price includes round trip motor coach transportation from Granville, N.Y., to New York City, motor coach gratuities, box breakfast, all museum admissions including guided tours, and box dinner. All reservations must be accompanied with full non-refundable payment by check or credit card (VISA or MasterCard). Travel insurance, which is not included in the cost, is recommended.

Observe the Jewish traditions of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, celebrated for eight nights in midwinter when the days are shortest and darkest. Learn the stories told each night about the war between Greek rulers and the Jews of the Land of Israel, which took place more that 2000 years ago. Play a game with the dreidel, learning the symbolism of this four-sided top. Enjoy tradition Hanukkah foods such as jelly doughnuts fried in oil to represent the miraculous jar of sacramental oil that burned for eight days when Temple Mount in Jerusalem had been reclaimed. And don't miss the new exhibit, From Pack Peddlers to Professionals: Jewish Life in the Slate Valley of New York and Vermont, 1840-present.
